A couple of weeks ago I attended a Chapter Meeting in Rugby for the UK branch of the NCN. A great day/night was had by all, and it was brilliantly organized by Steve Hearn, with special overseas guest Kage Nakanishi. This was the only artwork I produced in the 4 hours drawing time we had, but I think it's the best work I've done so far.

Self Caricature

Sitting in the departures lounge at Orlando International, I started using photoshop, trying out skills learned from Jan Op De Beeck, Dion Socia, Court Jones, and all of the other great caricature artists I was lucky enough to rub shoulders with at the convention. I started with a self caricature.

This has to be my favourite. Keelan Parham (ex-president of the NCN) with Roger Hurtago (current president) hanging onto the hair.

More, teeth, but getting better at them.

Getting teeth right was a big learning curve for me. I think I might have over-compensated on the first one.
Last week I attended my first ever National Caricaturists Network Convention in Orlando, Florida, and I can honestly say that I've learnt more in that week about the art of caricature, and in particular, my approach to it, than in my entire 25 years as a caricature artist (I started when I was ten). Being surrounded by so much talent, it would have been easy to throw in the towel and give up, but I couldn't help but be inspired to get better. I'll post the results of my progress right here, starting with the pictures I produced at the convention, back when I refused to use anything but the airbrush tool in Corel Painter (I'm now using photoshop). Hope you enjoy!
