Paul, this is amazing, excellent work! Can I ask, I know you said you didn't sketch it on but if you were going to, would you map out the picture in pencil? And how much detail would you put in? Because I do sketches which I think would look good painted but struggle to replicate them onto the canvas. Thanks:)

Dear Paul,
Thank you for sharing the wonderful work and the process, that's great!

Thanks guys!

Toby, I don't use pencil when painting, just paint. The main aim is to forget about the sketch as quickly as possible. It's a mistake to think that the sketch, however much you like it, is not the best it can be. Never get too attached to a sketch if you're planning to paint it.

When you're painting the likeness, do you refer to your sketch or the original reference material?

Great work!

Hi Bob,

I look between the sketch and the reference to figure out where I can move the likeness forward. Sometimes the likeness is good enough on the sketch, in that case I am trying to get a new take on the likeness in my painted version.
