Opening night of the Muhammed Ali exhibition went very well, lots of lovely people, including Ian Puleson-Davies, aka Owen from Coronation Street. The exhibition is looking great and a fun evening was had by all. Well done to the guys at Generation Pop! My works will be on display along with the rest of the exhibition for 2 weeks.

Muhammed Ali- Exhibition Opening!

Next week is a big week!! I will be attending the Muhammed Ali fine Art Exhibition at Generation Pop, where I am one of the official artists. The opening on Tuesday 17th is coinciding with Muhammed Ali's 70th Birthday, so I am deeply honoured to be able to be a part of it. Also, I was told today that BBC News 24 want to do live broadcasts and interviews with yours-truly and others throughout the day. Should be a fun day!

This is probably my favourite lesson. I spend a lot of my time with portraits, and it can be very easy to forget what it feels like to exaggerate. We can easily get out of the habit, so the above is a good exercise. It’s an opportunity to let loose!

Radio Times Spread- Christmas Edition

This is a spread for the Radio Times Christmas edition that goes on sale Wednesday, Dec 7th. It was finished earlier this week.

This was possibly the hardest I've ever had to work on an illustration, but I learnt a lot through the process. From first contact to finished piece was over a week, but by the time sketching and composition decisions were approved, I had roughly 4 and a half days to render, and I needed nearly every minute of that time to finish. Towards the end there was very little, in fact none, time for thinking, and it was purely a case of stamina and endurance that got me through it. There are many things I would like to fix if I could go back and have an extra half a day added to the deadline, such as repainting Andrew Lloyd Webber, but as that's impossible I have to accept it for what it is. I'm happy with the end result, and I'm honoured to have been asked to do it in the first place.

A sketch from this morning of Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson. If you live in the UK then you will probably have heard about his comments that have caused so much outrage. Here is a clip that is doing the rounds on the internet of his out-of-context words on 'The One Show'.

I'm not a big fan of Clarkson, I very rarely watch Top Gear, but the way people have reacted to this is extraordinary, mainly people on Twitter calling for him to be sacked. How can anyone truly believe that he would want someone shot? In fact he actually defended the strikers earlier in the programme, but the people complaining were probably the ones who didn't see that part of the show. It reminds me of the uproar by the church after 'Life of Brian' was released. Seriously...calm down people. To sum up, if Clarkson were a politician, I'd be extremely worried, but he's not, he just wants to sell his DVD, which by most accounts is storming up the christmas charts ;)

This was done the week before last for the issue out last Saturday. I chose to do this in oils, mainly to prove a point to myself that I could work to a deadline with a traditional painting and deliver a result I would be happy with. I'm pretty happy with this, there are a few details I probably would have added if I was working digitally, but the final print size of this is so small that they weren't as important as the overall image. Also, if the print size was bigger I'd be working on a bigger original so I could get closer to that detail. The client was very happy, so I feel I've done my job with it.

I had a couple of days for the rendering on this, I've got another one of these to do this week, but due to having other things to do, I'll be working digitally :(. I look forward to doing more illustrations in oils soon though! Here are the dimensions for the piece:

You may be wondering why I am using an acrylic portrait sketch of Britt Ekland to advertise a caricature course? The reason is simple. Before we can exaggerate with control, we need to know where the reality is. Working 'on-model' is essential to helping us 'see' exaggeration. There are many other tools that will help with being able to see the correct exaggeration, all of which are discussed and put into practice on the course. I have several students are doing it at present, all show improvement in their work in the space of just a few weeks!

To those of you considering signing up: be prepared to work hard. I stress this at every opportunity, on the tutorials, in the weekly critiques...you will get out of life what you put into it, and the same goes for this course. I expect a lot from my students- and have put a lot of work into the tutorials- but the desire to acheive has to come from you first.

Oil on Canvas 70 x 100cm. This was completed over a few days, using Burnt Sienna and Titanium white. Burnt Sienna can go quite dark when built up thickly, so there was no need to use black for the darkest darks.

I could have taken this further in terms of some of the values, but I felt the proportions could do with tweeking, which is impossible to do with watercolour, particularly when it gets to a certain stage. I am happy enough with it as a study, I felt I learnt a lot through just using the black watercolour, something I've done very rarely. My aim is to make a large-scale painting in colour from a black and white reference. I love using just the black watercolour to sketch with, I found it very relaxing, gradually building up the values. I'm sure I'll be doing it again soon!

400 Followers!! + my Nicholson sketch stolen!!!

So the good news is that this blog has reached 400 followers, so thank you all! The bad news is that I have had one of my sketches ripped off by a street 'artist' in New York. My thanks to Dan Springer for the photo. Dan is an artist friend of mine from NY, he took this photo on 39th Street. The guy ripping off my Nicholson, (among other artist's works that he has casually lifted from the internet and used as though he has free right to do so), cannot be called an artist. He is a thief, and a conman. He is conning the public into thinking he can draw. If he could, surely he would use his own artwork to advertise his business?? This is a shallow practice that can be seen all over the world (I have seen it here in the UK in Leicester Square, London), but this is the first time I have seen one of my sketches being used.

I just feel sorry for the people he cons into sitting for him. :(

Private Commission Work-in-progress + Student Reviews!

This is a small section from a commission I've been painting on-and-off for the last month or two. They are a lovely couple, very relaxed and friendly. It's a real pleasure working on this because of that, so as a result I'm spending much more time on it than I would normally for the amount of money they are paying for it. I'm really doing it more for the pleasure of painting. I'm using a split-complementary palette for it, paying close attention to values and likeness.

Got back from the London Film and Comic Convention yesterday, and I would firstly like to thank everyone who sat for me and allowed me to exaggerate their features, I just wish I'd taken some photos of your drawings, they were fun to do. There was however one person who wasn't as happy with his caricature, Mr Shatner (above). When I showed it to him (after paying to queue up for a signature), he refused to sign it, saying he didn't like the way it made him look. To his credit, he was very honest and gracious, he shook my hand and said it was a pleasure meeting me. I was then given my money back and shown the exit!

During the two days it was being painted at our table, it was getting plenty of positive feedback, and I think it is a good likeness and an honest depiction of Mr Shatner. I could have chosen a more flattering angle to draw, but for me, caricature isn't about flattery. I wasn't necessarily surprised that he didn't like it, his agent had already told me that he wouldn't, but I had to find out for myself.

So in terms of the business of caricature, I think it was a great weekend. I sold prints, did live drawings (none of them flattering, all well received!!), sold books, and made some new friends as well. Job done!!

Neil Davies also had a great weekend, selling lots of prints and getting a lot of interest in his paintings. I shall look forward to doing this again with him very soon!

London Film and Comic Con!!!

On the weekend of the 17th -18th July I will be exhibiting at the London Film and Comic Convention at Earl's Court, along with my friend and fellow caricaturist Neil Davies. There will also be plenty of stars attending, I'm sure I will get to draw a few of them over the weekend. I will also be doing a live painting over the course of the weekend, as well as selling books and prints. If you're thinking of attending, drop by our table and say 'hi'!

A piece for the Radio Times, done last week. Tony Adams is an ex-Arsenal and England footballer, the piece is reference to his appearance on Desert Island Discs on Radio 4...

Gabriel Carson!

Allow me to introduce the work of Gabriel Carson, a student coming to the end of my course at http://advancedcaricature.co.uk/. Gabriel has shown massive improvements in his drawing ability, it makes me proud to see the comparison between the work he showed on his first week, and the work he is now doing after receiving my critiques! It just shows what hard work and passion can do for the quality of your work, I'm looking forward to seeing more great work from him very soon.

New lessons start on the 2nd July, and the deadline for signing up is 25th June, so only a few days left!

Above is a quick watercolour sketch I did of myself last week, just for fun.

Finished a piece for the Radio Times a few hours ago, really pleased with it, it was fun to work on, will show it as soon as I'm allowed. Going to continue with an oil painting now, then do a bit of sketching.
