Practice sketching

These are off-the-cuff sketches to exercise the imagination, any resemblance to an existing person(s) is merely coincidental.

Mugabe sculpt (cont.)

After a couple of days, the sculpture is almost ready for baking. Then it's on to painting, adding hair, glasses etc.

Here's a progress report on the mugabe sculpture. First is the armature, using soft modelling wire to create the cage for the shoulders and head. I filled this out with aluminium foil, then started adding the Sculpey modelling clay. 'Super Sculpey' is an amazing material that stays soft until it is baked in an oven. It's also not cheap. I'm using the turnaround sketch to figure out the proportions and symmetry.

Plastecine Mugabe

Spent a couple of hours making this test model in plastecine. Rather than doing lots of sketches from various angles, doing this test stage has saved me lots of time.

Mugabe Sculpt

Time for another competition. This is again for the NCN Forum. The challenge for this one is to create a sculpture of a politician, including a narrative gag. My chosen subject is Robert Mugabe. This is my first sketch, which shows the Union Jack dripping away from his face. Even though he has pulled Zimbabwe out of the Commonwealth, he still holds the position of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath, given to him by Queen Elizabeth II.

I shall look forward to posting my progress here. I want to do a few more sketches to get his likeness just right before I start the sculpting process. Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to this! I've been wanting to do some sculpture for ages.

Hitchcock

This is a digital sketch on toned background. I love Hitchcock movies. He was an amazing director with great vision and a twisted sense of humour. My favourite films have to be Frenzy, Rear Window and Rope, but really I could list them all.

Bit of fun

This creature is a work-in-progress. I started it whilst at my brother's house. I think it's quite fun, and probably worth taking to full body, possibly even painting it.

The man of a thousand faces, Mr Jim Carrey, love him or hate him, I couldn't resist drawing his many expressions. These are just a few, gonna do some more tonight. These are no more than half an hour per face.
